Spaz!

Spaz! Come here! Why did you turn on the lights? yelled Spaz's mom. 10 year old Spaz looked up appologetically at his mom and said. I was trying to step over our trio sleeping dogs and I accidentally knocked into the light switch causing it to turn on. Spaz was sick of being blamed for things, running into things, and falling down a lot. It wasn’t his fault he was born with Cerebral palsy. Yet he felt like he was blamed for being unable to remain balanced every single day.

Spaz loved to dream. He dreamed of going to many places including space, the mountains, the beach, and on a cruise around the various oceans- Anything that can get him away from where he lives. He knew that his dreams were often times far fetched and unrealistic but he didn’t care about that. They were his dreams and that is all that counted.

When Spaz slept he was free to travel. His body, his family, and the community were unable to keep him from traveling. Spaz often dreamt of being a climber, a driver, an astronaut, and a cowboy. He loved to dream!

One night though he was startled awake suddenly when he heard someone knocking loud on his door. He got upset, and yelled- “Go away, I am sleeping!” but with no success.  The three dogs didn’t listen to him- they wanted to eat and play with him.

Slowly he got up and started to realize he was back down to reality and that reality stunk but that he now could do something about it- he could work hard at making his dreams a reality.

So he sat down and wrote his dreams out. Then he tried saying them outloud. Astronaut! Climber! Cowboy! These all may have been dreams. But they were also all possabilities!

As the days went on he started to do more research into each of those careers. He went to the Space Center at the Calgary International Airport to try out the various simulation spacecraft, he started climbing at the Calgary Rock climbing center, and he watched the rodeo religiously as the Stampede. His dreams were becoming a reality! When he was at the airport trying the spacecraft- he was an astronaut! When he climbed rocks at the Calgary Rock Climbing Center-  he was a climber, and when he saw the rodeo, met the riders, and petted the horses- he in deed was also a cow boy! He realized that just because people said he couldn’t do things it didn’t mean he couldn’t. The only real thing that was limiting him was himself. Once he got over that he was finally free!
